A Unique Addition
The owners of this ranch style house situated north of Bodega Bay asked John Cook, Architect, to design changes that would accommodate needs that were going unmet. The man wanted a private office from which he could enjoy the spectacular view of the Sonoma Coast. The lady wanted a warm, inviting room to entertain friends.
The result was a contemporary coastal style addition to an otherwise conventional house. The space occupied by an un-used bedroom was remodeled to create an atrium, from which stairs lead up to the office. Both rooms feature mitred glass at the corners. Cantalevered beams in the wall framing provide support for the roof over these unusual windows.
Exterior Redwood siding matches the existing. The interior of the addition is finished with tongue and groove Cedar paneling. The tile floor of the atrium is a passive solar element. A challenge to build, this work remains sound nearly 30 years later.
